Secret Weapon to Athletic Success

Consistency Over Intensity

Athletes are often driven by the desire to push themselves to the limit, to give their all in every training session and competition. While intensity is important, there’s another factor that plays a crucial role in athletic development: consistency. Consistency is the athlete’s best friend and a secret weapon to athletic improvement.  The more time an athlete can devote to training consistently, the greater the benefits they will reap.

Let’s consider a scenario: Basketball player A scores an impressive 40 points in two games early in the season but then only manages to average 5 points per game after that. On the other hand, there’s player B, who consistently scores 12 points in every game. Occasionally, player B might score 15 points, but you know that on any given night, you can rely on them for at least 12 points. Which player would you rather have on your team?

Training for intensity is like player A, who might have occasional stellar performances but is inconsistent overall. Intensity is valuable, but when it comes to athletic development, consistency is paramount. We’d rather see an athlete consistently train two days per week than train intensively for five days one month and then disappear for the next four to six weeks.

Whether it’s speed, strength, or explosive power, consistent training is the key to improvement. Here are three tips to help you maintain consistency in your training regimen:

  • Embrace Repetition: Success often comes from mastering the basics through repetition. While it may feel monotonous at times, understand that greatness is built on doing the same thing repeatedly. The best athletes in the world became great by perfecting the fundamentals day in and day out.

  • Start with the Basics: Before diving into complex drills or techniques, focus on consistently executing the fundamental skills. Just like the best shooters in basketball, who make difficult shots look effortless because they’ve mastered the basics, you should strive to excel at the fundamental aspects of your sport.

  • Avoid Constant PR Attempts: Personal records (PRs) are exciting, but they shouldn’t be the goal of every training session. Training is about building strength, speed, and skill over time. Push yourself, but don’t try to set a new PR in every workout. Avoiding this approach can prevent injuries that might derail your progress and consistency.

Intensity has its place in training, but consistency is the true cornerstone of athletic success. Getting in REPS! By prioritizing consistent training over sporadic bursts of intensity, you’ll lay a solid foundation for long-term improvement and success in your sport.
